This is a temporary reel containing work made in the past year whilst studying in MA Digital Effects 08/09 in the NCCA, UK.

All work was completed in Houdini, Shake, Nuke and Photoshop.

colour tests

shot some footage for my MA project over the weekend. It looked very video, so I treated some stills from the footage in photoshop to see what I could get out of them. the top right image is from an SLR, for light reference. hopefully it will look good when it all comes together. thanks to the lads from back home for helping out as extras!

I made this character as part of my idea pitch for my masters project, and took these various photos of it in basic situations as visual reference, to give some indication how a CG character might appear in similar setups and help sell the idea as a whole...

audio driven animation

This is just a basic test that came about from a course personal inquiry into an area of interest: audio driven animation. It's not light matched or integrated properly, just an r&d test with CHOPs networks in Houdini, using the audio stream to procedurally drive the animation. I read through Andrew Lowell's excellent book: "Simultaneous Music, Animation, and Sound with Houdini," to produce this effect. Check him out, http://www.andrew-lowell-productions.com/

seasick steve was at a loss. so he grew a beard. he was moving at 15 knots with nowhere to go. above, his skin caked and peeled in the sun, heat inflammed his whiskey nose. but below, he was below. below decks, below sea level and yet it remained beneath him to admit his defeat through loneliness. he sat for some time in his empty store. when he'd pick up radio signals, they were always in an asian language now, and their music pierced at his apathetic ear. so at night, steve, in all his haggered salty being, would take his guitar and under a bare lightbulb, he sang of his woes to any creature in the dark who would pause for concern.
